Sitting Up in Bed Case Study
This real-life case study details the problems one man experienced when trying to sit up in bed. A happy outcome was eventually arrived upon thanks to recommendations made by our knowledgeable Occupational Therapist.

Case Study - Sitting Up In Bed

Dave is 72 and lives with his wife in a 3 bed house; his medical condition causes him to become breathless on exertion. He has already had his house adapted with a stair lift and a wet room shower and is managing well with most daily living activities apart from sitting up in bed.

Difficulties

Dave is now struggling to sit up in bed even with a rail to hold onto because the exertion causes him to become breathless. His wife now has to assist him from lying up to sitting which means that they are both at risk of injury and Dave is dependent on his wife.

Recommendations

Dave still wanted to sleep in the double bed that he shares with his wife, I recommended a pillow lifer which sits only on his side on top of the mattress - this would allow Dave to raise himself from lying without disturbing his wife.

Outcome

Dave is now able to sit up in bed independently without becoming breathless and both he and his wife are now enjoying more restful night’s sleep.
